"All I ever wanted was to reach out and touch another human being not just with my hands but with my heart."
No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal, but The Reestablishment
has plans for her. Plans to use her as a weapon.
But Juliette has plans on her own.
After a lifetime without freedom, she's finally discovering a strength
to fight back for the very first time—and to find a future with the
one boy she thought she'd lost forever.
I was on Barnes and Noble's website and this was their top book. At
first I was a bit set off with the cover. But like they say, "Don't
judge a book by its cover."
But luckily I looked a bit closer an read:
"My touch is lethal. My touch is power."
What do you say or think when you read that? All I knew was that I
needed to read it. It definitely pulled me in.
Not only that, but other reviews were saying that it was a mix of
Hunger Games and X-Men. Well I haven't yet read the Hunger Games
series. Although, I do in fact have an obsession with the comic book
heroes.
First off, another dystopian theme. Something about it attracts me.
Imagining our world like theirs in the near future is scary, but the
mere possibility that it can happen is quite fascinating. It's also a bit paranormal romance.
To begin, main character Juliette was on the verge on insanity. Not
being loved, accepted, or even touched in her entire life, is a big
issue.
Finally, when the government locks her up for doing- for being
something she doesn't quite understands, she questions her humanity.
So in her own point of view, the story starts off with Juliette in a
prison/asylum. She states that she hasn't touch anyone in 264 days.
The poor girl doesn't even look into mirrors. Juliette even thinks of
herself as a monster. That someone should just end her and what she
can do is a curse.
Immediately, you pity her. She is obviously depressed and hates herself.
Now what she does isn't said. It's really vague. What is said is that
the government locked her up for doing- for being something she
doesn't quite understands. That may be the reason why she questions
her humanity.
On the second day in the book, Juliette wakes up to a young man
watching over her. Her new cellmate.
He's described gorgeous. I mean dangerous...Dark brown hair and these dark blue
eyes. With arms covered in tattoos.
Familiar and beautiful.
Adam Kent.
Let's just say I found my new literary character crush.
Mafi also includes the perfect villain. Blond, young, and emerald
eyes. Beautiful yet evil. He can kill someone without hesitation. He
has no regret. He has no soul. Evil, evil, evil. And obsessed with
Juliette. What more can you ask for? You hate him and you love him.
But you tip more on the hate side..
I don't want to say more about the story line and give anything away.
But I will say that it's not something I would want to pass up. It was
wonderfully written. Mafi created this horrifying world where love
still managed to exist. The emotions were everywhere! Depression,
fear, hate, romance, and love.
I experienced a whole different romance though. A love neither person
showed each other, until fate brought them together again. A love that
formed when both persons never spoke a word to each other. One that
was heartbreaking.
This book left me tearing up and crying every other page. Juliette's
life was so unfair and depressing. There was no hope for her. And then
one boy rekindled her with love and affection. He made her smile and
laugh! He gave her the love she always deserved.
What I adored about the romance was that he showed her none of those
things were true. Juliette was truly beautiful inside and out. It made
her stronger. More independent. I'm a feminist, so seeing her
progression toward her freedom and setting her goals was amazing.
Juliette's character transition was definitely extraordinary.
To sum it up, it's dark, intense, and full of emotions.
The twists and turns this book made was incredible. I never
anticipated what would come next. I couldn't put this book down. I
enjoyed this to the cover to the last page. Also jam packed with death
and romance! Intriguing would be the right word for this story.
You seriously don't want to miss out on this book. Adding to my
favorite list! So please take your time to check it out. Luckily it's
not a one shot. It's said to be a series. No lie.
Most importantly, I think I loved this book, because Juliette learned
that she wasn't a monster. She did not have a curse. Juliette had a
gift.
Here's the book trailer.
Signing off, V
